Understanding the Temporary Graduate Subclass 485 Visa
The Subclass 485 Visa is available to qualifying international students who have recently graduated from an Australian educational institution in a course meeting requirements of the Graduate Work Stream or Post-Study Work Stream. The visa allows you to live, study and work in Australia temporarily following studies. Students are only able to access the visa once as a primary applicant.
The two streams seek to provide graduates with the chance to complete post study programs in order to lead to permanent residency through a Subclass 189, 190 or a provisional Subclass 489 Visa. If applying as a main applicant, you and anyone else covered by your application must be in Australia when you apply and when your visa is decided.
Graduate Work Stream Requirements
For eligible graduates, a visa in this stream is granted for 18 months. Requirements include:
- Nomination of an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) – this cannot be changed after you apply
- Evidence of an application for a Skills Assessment
- Evidence of a Skills Assessment by an assessing authority that deems you suitable for your nominated occupation
- Meeting study requirements in the past six months
- Each qualification used to meet study requirements is closely related to your nominated occupation
Studies must result in a degree, diploma or trade qualification. For example, a student may complete two consecutive Diploma level courses and satisfy the Australian study requirement under the Graduate Work stream, provided the other components of the requirement are satisfied.
For qualifications to be considered closely related to your nominated occupation, the skills underpinning the qualification must be directly transferable to that occupation. This applies to the subject matter and level of qualification.
It is your responsibility to arrange for a Skills Assessment. We recommend contacting an authority in advance to prepare for procedures, timeframes and charges. Skills Assessments are valid until their expiry date or for a period of three years from issue.
Post-Study Work Stream Requirements
This stream is only available to students who applied for, and were granted, their first student visa to Australia on or after 5 November 2011. It applies to international students who graduate with a higher education degree from an Australian education provider, regardless of their field of study. Visas can be granted for up to four years depending on qualifications.
Only study that results in the conferral of an eligible degree level qualification will be considered. Eligible qualifications include:
- Bachelor degree
- Bachelor (honours) degree
- Masters by coursework degree
- Masters (extended) degree
- Masters by research degree
- Doctoral degree
All courses used to satisfy Australian study requirements must be undertaken at eligible education providers.
Only certain qualifications at Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 7 or above (Bachelor degree level or above), leading to the conferral of an eligible degree level qualification, may go towards meeting Australian study requirements. Degree level courses that are packaged with a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma course may be considered, provided they complete an eligible qualification.
